En América del Norte, en la década de 1980, surgió el movimiento del “santuario” como un medio para la prestación de apoyo, promoción y protección de los refugiados y otros migrantes vulnerables. En los últimos&nbsp; años, estos movimientos han crecido rápidamente por toda Europa, animados en gran medida por los&nbsp; activistas de la fe que invocan una serie de principios morales básicos relacionados con las tradiciones&nbsp; religiosas. Los activistas contemporáneos del “santuario”, se asocian con tradiciones religiosas antiguas&nbsp; basadas en la protección y fundadas en la empatía y la solidaridad, que son de hecho parte integral de todas&nbsp; las formas de organización social.
